Melina Rai is one of the top female playback singers in Nepal. Besides film music, she sings classical, pop, modern, ghazal, festival, devotional and patriotic songs. She is one of the most sought after female playback singers in resent time and has contributed immensely to the Nepali movie and music industry.

Early Years

Melina Rai was born on December 7 in Kurseong, Darjeeling although her family is originally from Khotang District. She was trained in music by her father musician and music teacher Jibesh Rai. She spent her childhood in Darjeeling but moved to Kathmandu with her family when she was 10 years old. As she was passionate towards music from her childhood she participated in various singing competitions. She continued her singing as well her education. She also participated in 'Children Song Competition' organized by Radio Nepal and recorded her first ever song "Himal Ko Kakh" at the age of 11 which was also featured in Radio Nepal. In 2065 BS she participated and won the "National Modern Song Competition" organized by Radio Nepal.

Musical Career

Melina Rai released her solo album Bahar for more recognition in Nepali music industry. Kammar Mahi Patuki and Shirai Ma Shirbandi was her breakthrough performance. After the success of the both songs she never had to look back and sang and collaborated with renowned musicians and singers. Her success made her perform in many national and international concers. Her most popular song Kutu ma Kutu from the movie Dui Rupaiya is the most viewed Nepali song in the history of YouTube. Melina Rai's most famous songs are Kammar Mathi Patuki, Shirai Ma Shirbandi, Kutu Ma Kutu, Ajambari Maya, Is It Love?, Timile Bato Fereu Are and Ayo Teeja Ko Lahar etc.
